Dear 8th Grade Parents.

The purpose of this email is twofold: first to begin planning for the 2009-2010 school year and second to address 8th grade transition to high school.

1)     It is time to begin planning for next school year.  We will start talking about schedules, academic programs, and events that need extra planning.  Teachers have already started coming to me with requests which would improve programs.  Planning the schedules can be a bit complicated as this is a K-12 school; for example, a change for 6th grade may affect the high school schedule.  It is also time to begin looking at athletic programs, sports teams and related needs (coaches, scheduling, etc.).  In addition, Mr. Swanson is beginning to plan for the Washington DC trip and needs to get a rough estimate of the number of students who might attend that trip.

2)    The 2007-2008 parent survey indicated that Legacy needs to help students transition to the next levels (both middle school and high school).  Last May, I met with the 5th grade class about transitions issues; then in October I talked with the 6th grade class about the pros and cons of transitioning to middle school.  During 6th period on Friday, January 9th, a panel of seven to eight high school students will give a short presentation to 8th grade students.  We will ask the 8th grade students to take some notes, write down what they heard, and any specific questions they might have.  We will schedule another session on Tuesday, January 13th, (also during 6th period) to facilitate some discussion between the 8th grade students and the high school panel using the 8th graders’ notes from the original presentation as a discussion guide.  Additionally, Mr. Crofford will facilitate another 8th grade/HS parent meeting on January 14th in the library at 3:40PM (all are invited); and a summary of the student session can be shared at that time.  We are considering going through this same process with the 7th grade class and the high school panel at a later time.

To help us with future planning and successful transition activities, would you please return a quick email which indicates whether:

(1) Your child will be returning to Legacy for the freshman year,
(2) Your child will not be returning to Legacy for the freshman year, or
(3) You are undecided at this time if your child will be returning to Legacy or not and you need more time to make a final decision.

We thank you in advance for a quick response to this email.
