{"id":3350,"date":"2013-02-10T18:24:59","date_gmt":"2013-02-11T01:24:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/elbertcounty.net\/blog\/2013\/02\/10\/on-publishing-public-meetings\/"},"modified":"2013-02-10T18:24:59","modified_gmt":"2013-02-11T01:24:59","slug":"on-publishing-public-meetings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/elbertcounty.net\/blog\/2013\/02\/on-publishing-public-meetings\/","title":{"rendered":"on publishing public meetings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;In America today we have television and the Internet, vehicles of instant mass communication unimagined previously.\u00a0 One might say that these prove Madison wrong.\u00a0 What do they show in the political debate except a clamor of distortion and cock-and-bull, self-serving and partisan?\u00a0 But does it not often happen that someone gets a camera and a microphone into a political meeting not meant for the whole public?\u00a0 And when that happens, one hears a tone that is very different.\u00a0 The person who yesterday was saying in a televised interview that he had great respect for his opponents and hoped to reach agreement with them says in private company that he hopes to push them in the ditch.\u00a0 Open communication must be more civil; it must appeal to a wider sense of justice.\u00a0 The effort to <em>seem<\/em> fair elevates the public debate and confines our speech to more reasonable points.\u00a0 Also it is harder to get away with pushing someone in the ditch if you have promised not to do it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Larry P.
