{"id":3288,"date":"2013-01-03T00:12:54","date_gmt":"2013-01-03T07:12:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/elbertcounty.net\/blog\/2013\/01\/03\/freedom-and-responsibility\/"},"modified":"2013-01-03T10:43:08","modified_gmt":"2013-01-03T17:43:08","slug":"freedom-and-responsibility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/elbertcounty.net\/blog\/2013\/01\/freedom-and-responsibility\/","title":{"rendered":"freedom and responsibility"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Republican Party in Elbert County talks about how their job is to elect Republicans.\u00a0 And surely it is, but that\u2019s like having a job to make sure the wind blows around here.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to happen regardless of what anyone does.<\/p>\n<p>The Elbert County New Plains Left have already criticized the new commission, and no matter what happens over the next two years, they will stay hyper critical.\u00a0 Recalls will be attempted and lost.\u00a0 Defamatory <a href=\"http:\/\/elbertcounty.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/the-mcshay-cartoon-bashing-commissioners.pdf\" title=\"cartoons\">cartoons<\/a> and opinion <a href=\"http:\/\/elbertcounty.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/new-plains-reviews-2012.pdf\" title=\"paragraphs\">paragraphs<\/a> will be penned.\u00a0 Commissioners will be stalked, ridiculed, insulted, and made the butt of jokes.\u00a0 Very little of what commissioners actually say will be addressed in the context it is delivered.\u00a0 All ambiguities will be construed against them.\u00a0 No benefit of doubt will accrue to them.<\/p>\n<p>Will they deserve this maximally harsh treatment?\u00a0 No, of course not.\u00a0 But what treatment do they deserve?<\/p>\n<p>The new commissioners were built up by the New Plains Left last Spring and Summer.\u00a0 Everyone knew the Left\u2019s support for Rowland and Ross would evaporate if they defeated Shipper and Schwab, because the point was to put weaker candidates in place to face off against the Democrats.\u00a0 But the Democrats were supposed to win in the General election.\u00a0 When they didn\u2019t, the Left were exposed in an awkward hypocrisy.<\/p>\n<p>In the wings of this Primary electoral Kabuki theater, the Republican Central Committee sat silent.\u00a0 The ECR leadership, deterred by ECR bylaws from speaking out before the Primary, <em>to this day<\/em> have maintained public silence about the new commissioners.\u00a0 Rowland and Ross return the favor by avoiding Republican Central Committee meetings.\u00a0 Silence by the Republican leadership in 2012 constructively helped them get elected, but concerns about the candidates&#8217; Republican bona-fides persist.<\/p>\n<p>Conservatives believe in a linkage between freedom and responsibility\u2014the two positively correlate.\u00a0 The ECR leadership freely chose their path in 2012.\u00a0 By doing so they earned the responsibility to do what they can to make this electoral outcome benefit Elbert County.\u00a0 Voters elected Republicans, not liberals.\u00a0 ECR leaders have a duty to deliver Republicans, not liberals.\u00a0 ECR leadership may not just bow out and allow matters to foreseeably degrade now that the election is over.<\/p>\n<p>While there is no legality to enforce this duty, the ECR leadership have an ethical responsibility to help this commission understand and act on real conservative values, <em>every step of the way<\/em>, at least until they prove they can govern as Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>Party leaders spend many unremunerated hours to make the Elbert County Republican Party function.\u00a0 This provides a valuable service to the county.\u00a0 Other things being equal, that is more than anyone has a right to expect of them.\u00a0 But other things are no longer equal.<\/p>\n<p>Without the bully pulpits of ECR leadership joined in the fight to keep these commissioners on a conservative track, voters will be at the mercy of the New Plains Left, and the uncertain Republican bona-fides from the candidates themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Our ECR leadership must step up to offset the non-stop din emitted from the local Left.\u00a0 They need to defend and protect our Republican values in local property, zoning and taxation issues\u2014all founded in constitutional principles.\u00a0 Empty rhetoric and campaign lip service will not protect us for the next two years.<\/p>\n<p>The ECR leadership faces an intra-party election this February.\u00a0 The next two years are no time to continue business as usual.\u00a0 The next class of party officials must step up to the nature of this reality, use their offices to guide substantive local issues, and help make sure that conservative values prevail in Elbert County governance.<\/p>\n<p>B_Imperial, Precinct 13<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Republican Party in Elbert County talks about how their job is to elect Republicans.\u00a0 And surely it is, but that\u2019s like having a job to make sure the wind blows around here.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to happen regardless of what anyone does.
