Will An Obama Administration Be Totalitarian?: Part II<\/a><\/h4>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">Examining President Barack Hussein Obama\u2019s ubiquity \u2013\u00a0when your favorite TV show has <em>not<\/em> been pre-empted yet again by one of his prime time speeches or press conferences, you can still watch his <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=k3e1pQqQ89Y%am987%EF%BF%BDature=player_embedded\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">Public Service Announcement<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\"> (video link) about national service that gets heavy rotation, even on FOX \u2013 an unabashedly worshipful article by Jennifer Senior in<em> New York<\/em> magazine <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/news\/politics\/58199\/\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">noted<\/font><\/a><span><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\">: \u201cSince occupying the White House, Barack Obama has hosted fifteen town-hall meetings; appeared in more than 800 images on the White House Flickr photo-stream; and held four prime-time press conferences, the same number held by George W. Bush in his entire presidency.\u201d <\/font><\/font><\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\">To what end? \u201cHe\u2019s trying nothing less than to realign American values. \u2026 To Obama, educating Americans \u2026 means offering them a kind of moral instruction, one that reshapes their ideas about what\u2019s required of them: industry, responsibility, empathy, humility.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">Well, Chairman Mao was also trying to realign Chinese values, and his <\/font><span><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=-1UETU2h-AoC&amp;dq=chairman+mao%sq243%s+red+book&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;source=in&amp;hl=en&amp;ei=F5t_SszuGNKvtgfo69H7AQ&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=book_result&amp;ct=result&amp;resnum=11#v=onepage&amp;q=&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">Red Book<\/font><\/a><\/font><\/span><span><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\"> exhorted his countrymen to apply Marxist-Leninist theory and ideology to become<span>\u00a0 <\/span>more industrious (pages 227- 229), responsible (pages 251-266), empathetic (page 296) and humble (pages 288-290). <o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\">To enable him to guide <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">China<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> towards what he perceived to be a more enlightened future, Mao created a cult of personality. Is Obama taking a page from Mao\u2019s little Red Book and cultivating and feeding the cultish devotion he needs to radically alter our domestic and national security policies?<o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">Wikipedia <\/font><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cult_of_personality\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">defines<\/font><\/a><span><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\"> a cult of personality as <\/font><\/span><span><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u201caris[ing] when a country&#8217;s leader uses mass media to create a heroic public image, often through unquestioning flattery and praise. \u2026 A cult of personality is similar to general hero worship, except that it is created specifically for political leaders.\u201d By \u201cpolitical leaders,\u201d Wikipedia means, generally, despots and dictators &#8211; <\/font><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joseph_Stalin\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">Joseph Stalin<\/font><\/a><span><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">, <\/font><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adolf_Hitler\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">Adolf Hitler<\/font><\/a><span><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">, <\/font><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Josip_Broz_Tito\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">Josip Broz Tito<\/font><\/a><span><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">, <\/font><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nicolae_Ceau%C5%9Fescu\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">Nicolae Ceau?escu<\/font><\/a><span><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">, <\/font><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ferdinand_Marcos\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">Ferdinand Marcos<\/font><\/a><span><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">, <\/font><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ho_Chi_Minh\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">Ho Chi Minh<\/font><\/a><span><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">, <\/font><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ayatollah_Khomeini\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">Ayatollah Khomeini<\/font><\/a><span><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">, and <\/font><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kim_Jong-Il\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">Kim Jong-Il<\/font><\/a><span><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\">. <o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">Leaving aside Dan Rather\u2019s <\/font><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2009\/08\/07\/AR2009080703183_pf.html\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">desire<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\"><span> to have the government \u201c<\/span>make recommendations for improving the news,<span>\u201d the illustration from <em>New York<\/em> magazine\u2019s article unwittingly represents the jaw-dropping degree to which a compliant mass media has been a tool for Obama\u2019s <\/span><\/font><\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.townhall.com\/columnists\/KathleenParker\/2008\/02\/22\/the_ecstacy_of_barack\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">ongoing<\/font><\/a><span><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\"> efforts to insinuate the government \u2013 personified by himself \u2013 into every aspect of our lives:<o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<span><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">Take, for instance, this fawning article by <em>The <st1:city w:st=\"on\">Boston<\/st1:city> Globe\u2019s<\/em> <st1:state w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> bureau chief Peter Canellos, <\/font><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/nation\/washington\/articles\/2009\/04\/07\/in_a_stroke_of_brilliance_obama_defies_easy_caricature?mode=PF\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">insisting<\/font><\/a> that \u201cObama, so far, seems to occupy a place in the popular culture beyond humor. Ridicule doesn&#8217;t touch him. \u2026 His calm, serious manner, magnified by his intelligence and command over the issues, reinforces the perception of a diligent public servant at work<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">Amateur and professional artists, too, are aiding and abetting the MSM in its hagiographic portrayal of Obama, <\/font><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.commentarymagazine.com\/viewarticle.cfm\/the-art-of-obama-worship-15218\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">explains<\/font><\/a><span><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\"> Michael Lewis in <em>Commentary<\/em> magazine: <o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 20pt\"><span><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\">Obama is hardly the first president whose physical likeness has been the subject of devotional art. Yet the others who achieved this status did so only after they had accomplished something great, like <st1:state w:st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:state>, or had been martyred, like Kennedy, or in the case of <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Lincoln<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, both. Obama\u2019s iconic status is of a different nature, an artifact not of his presidency but his identity &#8211; a youthful man of mixed race and remarkable attractiveness upon whom the greatest of expectations have come to rest. This means that the role played by art, and by artists, has been different in Obama\u2019s campaign and presidency from any other in American history. \u2026<o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 20pt\"><span><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 20pt\"><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\">[T]here is something unsettling about images that offer little more political commentary than an uncomplicated adulation that borders on power worship. By showing the subjects removed from all political context, and in a beatific reverie, such art produces images that are aesthetically indistinguishable from the \u201cdear leader\u201d effigies that delighted the dictators of the 1930s or of our own day.<span><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\"><span>But despite these strenuous efforts to create the superhuman mystique about Obama upon which a cult of personality depends, Americans are, by nature, too skeptical and impudent to choose thralldom over freedom, argues <\/span><st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:placename w:st=\"on\">Johns<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename w:st=\"on\">Hopkins<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> professor Fouad Ajami i<span>n a recent <em>Wall Street Journal <\/em><\/span><\/font><\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052970203706604574370301468452872.html\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">op-ed<\/font><\/a><span><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">: <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 20pt\"><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">The politics of charisma is so <st1:place w:st=\"on\">Third World<\/st1:place>. Americans were never going to buy into it for long. \u2026<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 20pt\"><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 20pt\"><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">Mr. Obama isn&#8217;t <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Lincoln<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> with a BlackBerry. Those great personages are made by history, in the course of history, and not by the spinners or the smitten talking heads. \u2026<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 20pt\"><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 20pt\"><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">American democracy has never been democracy by plebiscite, a process by which a leader is anointed, then the populace steps out of the way, and the anointed one puts his political program in place. In the American tradition, the &#8220;mandate of heaven&#8221; is gained and lost every day and people talk back to their leaders. They are not held in thrall by them. The leaders are not infallible or a breed apart. That way is the <st1:place w:st=\"on\">Third World<\/st1:place> way, the way it plays out in Arab and Latin American politics. <\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">Want proof? <em>The New York Times<\/em> <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/08\/27\/us\/27baby.html?_r=1&amp;ref=todayspaper&amp;pagewanted=print\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">reports<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\"> that of the four million babies born in the U.S in 2008, \u201c<span>if any of them were named Barack, there were not enough to make the annual ranking of the 1,000 most popular baby names.\u201d (And by the way, the First Lady leaves so many Americans cold that the name Michelle actually fell in popularity from 94<sup>th<\/sup> in 2007 to 103<sup>rd<\/sup> last year).<\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">For his part, <em>Washington Post<\/em> columnist Michael Gerson <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2009\/08\/25\/AR2009082502545_pf.html\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">notes<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\"> that Obama is losing ground on healthcare &#8220;reform,&#8221; cap-and-trade and other big-ticket items on his agenda because \u201c<span>Americans were neither as desperate nor as malleable as they were during the New Deal.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\"><span>Even so, Obama and the people who surround him have a disturbing instinct towards the heavy-handed m<\/span>anipulation and intimidation common throughout the <st1:place w:st=\"on\">Third World<\/st1:place>: <span><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\"><strong>\u2020\u00a0<\/strong><span>Back in November, Black Panthers <\/span><\/font><\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052970203550604574361071968458430.html?mod=djemBestOfTheWeb\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">stopped people from voting<\/font><\/a><span><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\"> and now, the AFL-CIO and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) are \u201cbringing their muscle to bear to the raucous health-care debates that have erupted \u2026 in Congressional town hall meetings across the country,\u201d <\/font><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com\/2009\/08\/06\/unions-joining-the-fray-in-health-care-overhaul\/?hp\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">reports<\/font><\/a><span><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\"> <em>The New York Times<\/em>. As <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> columnist Peggy Noonan tartly <\/font><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052970204908604574334623330098540.html\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">points out<\/font><\/a><span><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\">, \u201c[s]omehow that doesn\u2019t sound like a peace initiative.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\"><strong>\u2020\u00a0<\/strong><span>After asking Americans to forward \u201c<\/span><\/font><\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/stories\/0809\/26188.html\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">fishy e-mails<\/font><\/a><span><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\">\u201d about healthcare \u201creform\u201d to an electronic tip box and using cookies to collect the names and E-mail addresses of anyone who visits the White House Web site, the administration backed down after electronic privacy experts and conservatives raised a ruckus over how the data would be used \u2013 and that it was being collected in the first place.<o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\"><strong>\u2020\u00a0<\/strong><span>When <em>The Washington Times<\/em> interviewed car dealers about the problems they were having getting their \u201ccash for clunkers\u201d transactions processed, several <\/span><\/font><\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/thestilettoblog.com\/2009\/08\/03\/the-daily-blade--a-barrel-of-fun.aspx\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">insisted<\/font><\/a><span><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\"> on remaining anonymous, because they feared \u201cretaliation\u201d from the Obama administration (second item). If you think their fears were overblown, just <\/font><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/thestilettoblog.com\/2008\/10\/27\/the-daily-blade--never-mind-marxism-will-an-obama-administration-be-totalitarian.aspx\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">remember what happened<\/font><\/a><span><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\"> to Joe The Plumber.<o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\"><strong>\u2020\u00a0<\/strong><span>Until <\/span><\/font><\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/09\/04\/us\/04school.html?_r=1&amp;pagewanted=print\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">parents objected<\/font><\/a><span><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">, Obama <\/font><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2009\/sep\/05\/white-house-lukewarm-about-adviser-jones\/?source=newsletter_must-read-stories-today_photo_feature\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">planned<\/font><\/a><span><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\"> to recruit school kids to push his agenda, with a lesson plan for kids ranging from <\/font><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ed.gov\/teachers\/how\/lessons\/prek-6.doc\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">pre-kindergarten<\/font><\/a><span><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\"> to <\/font><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ed.gov\/teachers\/how\/lessons\/7-12.doc\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">grade 12<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\"><span> distributed to teachers by the U.S. Education Department to accompany his speech that included such assignments as writing a paper on how they can &#8220;help the president.&#8221; Republicans expressed concern about <\/span>&#8220;<\/font><\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.twincities.com\/news\/ci_13261749?source=rss\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">indoctrinat[ing] America&#8217;s children<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\"> to [Obama\u2019s] socialist agenda,&#8221; <span>\u201cthe theme of obedience to government,\u201d and the classroom activities designed to create a cult of personality. &#8220;This is something you&#8217;d expect to see in <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">North Korea<\/st1:country-region> or in Saddam Hussein&#8217;s <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place>,&#8221; as<span>\u00a0 <\/span>state Sen. Steve Russell (R-OK) put it. <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.25pt\">In a <em>Washington Times<\/em> <\/span><\/font><\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2009\/sep\/08\/pruden-a-crucial-week-for-obamas-teleprompter\/?source=newsletter_must-read-stories-today_more_news_carousel\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">op-ed<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.25pt\">, the paper\u2019s editor emeritus, Wes Pruden, notes,<\/span><span><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 20pt\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.25pt\"><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\">Obama \u2026 got a taste of constituent anger at a distance when he tried to recruit <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>&#8216;s schoolkids into the Obama cult of hope, change, peace and other vaguely good stuff. Write a letter to yourself, his Education Ministry told the kids in &#8220;a lesson plan&#8221; distributed to classrooms across the country, and tell the president what you can do to help him. The operative word here, clearly, is &#8220;him.&#8221; This sounded a lot like a cult of presidential personality to millions of American parents &#8211; the bigots, evildoers and Nazis of the fevered and frightened Democratic imagination. Promote your agenda, but not with my kids, the parents told the White House, loud and clear. <o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 20pt\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.25pt\"><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 20pt\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.25pt\"><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\">The White House, first dismissing the protests as &#8220;silly&#8221; and pretending that Mr. Obama&#8217;s speech was really only about hand-washing and good toilet etiquette, finally backed down with the familiar explanation that &#8220;we didn&#8217;t do it and we won&#8217;t do it again (at least until next time).&#8221; <o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 20pt\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.25pt\"><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.25pt\">And Obama\u2019s MO suggests <em>there will be<\/em> a next time. <\/span><span>Writing in <em>American Thinker<\/em>, John Griffing <\/span><\/font><\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanthinker.com\/2009\/09\/swine_flu_path_to_martial_law.html\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">wonders<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\"><span> whether \u201c<\/span>a form of martial law [is] imminent\u201d because \u2013 not wanting to waste a crisis \u2013 \u201cObama appears ready to cross the Rubicon, and all he needs is a killer virus. Griffing connects these dots to make the case that \u201c<st1:state w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> certainly seems to be looking for some rationale for enhanced domestic military involvement, whether credible or not\u201d: <\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\"><strong>\u2020\u00a0<\/strong>Obama\u2019s Executive Order <\/font><\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/2008\/09\/army_homeland_090708w\/\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">basing<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\"> 80,000 active troops at home for the first time in the history of the peacetime military establishment; <\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\"><strong>\u2020\u00a0<\/strong>The military has <\/font><\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2009\/US\/07\/28\/military.swine.flu\/\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">established<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\"> regional deployment locations all across the <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">United States<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> to \u201cassist civilian authorities in the event of a significant outbreak of the H1N1 virus this fall; <\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\"><strong>\u2020\u00a0<\/strong>Swine flu has been made into a crisis in the minds of the public \u2026 [g]lobal swine flu deaths topped just 1,000 <\/font><\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/health-and-families\/health-news\/global-swine-flu-deaths-top-1000-1764022.html\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">this year<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\"> \u2026 [b]ut President Obama is predicting death tolls of 90,000 and possible infection of up to half the US population; and<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\"><strong>\u2020\u00a0<\/strong>The National Guard is even practicing mock takeovers of public schools in the event of an \u201cH1N1 riot\u201d<\/font><\/font><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">;\u00a0 <\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">Explaining that \u201c[m]artial law has essentially been on the table since President Obama took office, thanks to the Bush Administration\u2019s <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/opinion\/greenwald\/2008\/09\/24\/army\/\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">dramatic revisions<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\"> of the Posse Comitatus Act &#8211; which limited deployment of the US military at home &#8211; in the wake of Hurricane Katrina,\u201d Griffing notes that in addition to quelling swine-flu fueled \u201criots,\u201d \u201cSecretary of Defense Robert Gates has \u2026 <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.progressive.org\/wx081209b.html\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">ask[ed] for<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\"> the unprecedented authority to base 400,000 soldiers in communities all across the United States\u201d in the event that martial law is imposed to deal with \u201cunforeseen economic collapse, loss of functioning political and legal order, purposeful domestic resistance or insurgency, pervasive public health emergencies, and catastrophic natural and human disasters are all paths to disruptive domestic shock.\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">Griffing warns that, \u201cObama is no ordinary President.\u00a0 This is the man who began his political career in <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/stories\/0208\/8630.html\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">the home<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\"> of terrorists Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn, former members of the notorious Weather Underground that <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wnd.com\/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&amp;pageId=78929\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">plotted<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\"> the deaths of 25 million Americans in \u2018re-education camps.\u2019&#8221;<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">After reading Griffing\u2019s chilling description of the totalitarian dystopia that could be unfolding before our very eyes, <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Max_Blumenthal\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">Max Blumenthal<\/font><\/a><span><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u2019s recent <\/font><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/09\/03\/opinion\/03blumenthal.html?th=%am987%EF%BF%BDxnnl=1&amp;emc=th%am987%EF%BF%BDxnnlx=1251997348-P5EEc5osd4%20BputAR3spLw&amp;pagewanted=print\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">op-ed<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\"><span> in <em>The New York Times<\/em> &#8211;<em> <\/em>meant to reprove the Republican Party\u2019s \u201cbe[ing] captured by its extremist wing\u201d since Obama assumed the presidency &#8211; takes on an entirely new cast. Blumenthal quotes from a 1959 letter President Dwight Eisenhower wrote to World War II veteran Robert Biggs, who longed for a leader who would \u201cspeak for us\u201d and was certain that American people would \u201cback \u2026 completely if the statement is made in truth\u201d in which he recommended that his constituent read <\/span>\u201cThe True Believer\u201d by Eric Hoffer<span>:<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 20pt\"><span><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\">Eisenhower \u2026 explained to Biggs that Hoffer \u201cpoints out that dictatorial systems make one contribution to their people which leads them to tend to support such systems &#8211; freedom from the necessity of informing themselves and making up their own minds concerning these tremendous complex and difficult questions.\u201d The authoritarian follower, Eisenhower suggested, desired nothing more than insulation from the pressures of a free society. \u2026<o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 20pt\"><span><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 20pt\"><span><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\">[P]erhaps it was his experience as supreme commander of Allied forces in <st1:place w:st=\"on\">Europe<\/st1:place> that taught him that <strong>the rise of extreme movements and authoritarianism could take root anywhere &#8211; even in a democracy<\/strong> [emphasis, The Stiletto.]<o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">But as Ajami <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052970203706604574370301468452872.html\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">observes<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\">, most Americans are\u00a0resistant to this sort of thing:<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 20pt\"><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">Those protesters in those town-hall meetings have served notice that Mr. Obama&#8217;s charismatic moment has passed. Once again, the belief in that American exception that set this nation apart from other lands is re-emerging. Health care is the tip of the iceberg. Beneath it is an unease with the way the verdict of the 2008 election was read by those who prevailed. It shall be seen whether the man swept into office in the moment of national panic will adjust to the nation&#8217;s recovery of its self-confidence.<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span><font face=\"Verdana\"><font size=\"2\">Again, to what end is Obama using the Department of Education, <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtontimes.com\/weblogs\/watercooler\/2009\/sep\/10\/arts-organizations-received-15-million-grants-prio\/?feat=home_blogs\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\">National Endowment for the Arts<\/font><\/a>\u00a0and other federal agencies to create a cult of personality around him? Clearly, he wants to keep the True Believers amongst us stoked. Why? Because even 400,000 soldiers aren\u2019t enough to subdue an armed populace, and an army of millions of minions rabidly loyal to The One may come in handy. <o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span><o:p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">The <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/02\/11\/opinion\/11krugman.html?_r=2&amp;oref=slogin\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">menacing fervor<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\"> of the True Believers helped put Obama over the top during the to-the-death primary match with Hillary Clinton. And remember when Dem leaders were openly debating whether there would be <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/transcripts.cnn.com\/TRANSCRIPTS\/0810\/07\/acd.02.html\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">riots in the streets to rival the 1960s<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\"> if Obama did not win the election?
