Sardeshmukh<br \/>\nReceived: 22 August 2007 \/ Accepted: 14 July 2008\u00a0 Springer-Verlag 2008<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Abstract<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>Evidence is presented that the recent worldwide<br \/>\nland warming has occurred largely in response to a<br \/>\nworldwide warming of the oceans rather than as a direct<br \/>\nresponse to increasing greenhouse gases (GHGs) over land.<br \/>\nAtmospheric model simulations of the last half-century<br \/>\nwith prescribed observed ocean temperature changes, but<br \/>\nwithout prescribed GHG changes, account for most of the<br \/>\nland warming. The oceanic influence has occurred through<br \/>\nhydrodynamic-radiative teleconnections, primarily by<br \/>\nmoistening and warming the air over land and increasing<br \/>\nthe downward longwave radiation at the surface.
