The Elbert County Left’s on-line venues continue in silent mourning over Commissioner Schlegel’s announcement that he’ll not seek a second term. The news must have completely overturned their strategy for the next election cycle.
After years of portraying the man as evil incarnate loosed upon pastoral Elbertonia, their roadmap for the 2014 election was seemingly all laid out. All they had to do was keep sucker punching the good natured administrator with more of their usual ridicule, vitriol and bile to keep him covered in mud and the rest would be history.
That he was leagues ahead of his commissioner peers in the execution of sound, legal, public leadership was of no consequence to the Left. Since they could never get past how weak and disorganized his administrative talents made them look, they instead attacked him with South Park rip-off comic figures, intentional mispronunciations of his last name, and the usual enviro and class-envy memes that occupy the Leftist mind.
So, after the Left have chased the most letter-of-the-law adept public administrator out of the BOCC, they’ve gone to ground, one must assume, out of shame.
We’ll have to wait and see who the Left, the Republicans, or some weird conspiracy of convenience between the two, put up for the next caucus road show.
All we know at this point is that he or she won’t be a messiah who can walk into this county and undo years of zoning mayhem, because the powers that be have shown they like a stagnant bedroom economy with no jobs, they want to see their children leave home after high school and never come back, they’re okay being hours away from a hospital, and they don’t mind spending 3 hours on the road each day if they’re lucky enough to have a job because it’s only their precious time.
And we know that he or she will pledge to protect our water above all else, because we must have water to sustain us while we cash those unemployment checks, spend those food stamp subsidies, and search in vain for one of the few remaining docs who accept Medicaid patients.
Yeah, the Left are doing a great job around here. And if Republicans should happen to find some fool for the job who makes the Left look bad, though they hardly need help in this regard, the Left will just chase them out too.
Thank you Commissioner Schlegel. You moved the ball probably as much as it was ever going to be moved in this crowd.
