The thing to remember about Amsterdam is if you want coffee, go to a cafe’, not a coffee house. Coffee houses are where you get marijuana and you have to be 18 to go in. Coffee houses are all over the place and you pretty much know whenever you’re downwind of one. And if you see a red light in a window, turn the kid around and walk back the other way. The scenery is rich, the people are beautiful, the food is top notch, and history is pouring out of every doorway. Oh, and the bikes will run you down. If you hear a little bell behind you, get out of the way. The ICE or Inter City Express train from Dusseldorf to Amsterdam should have taken a little over 2 hours, but took closer to 3 hours today due to a derailment near the Amsterdam end of the link and a the requirement to transfer to a local train for part of the way. The ICE train is really fast and has pressurized compartments. Very smooth and quiet. We’d like to return to Amsterdam some day. We just scratched the surface this trip.
