Meeting audio file links are available below.\u00a0 <\/span><\/font>I did not take notes at the meeting,\u00a0however, a few impressions stand out:<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

Dir Bleich came well prepared for this meeting.\u00a0 His board training document was fairly thorough and he covered it succinctly without much unessential discussion.\u00a0 The meeting lasted just under 2 hours, and this was about right.\u00a0 A number of elements of a normal board meetings were not done since Dirs Bleich, Walter, Craley and Campbell were the only ones present, i.e. no staff, no other visitors than myself, no normal school business or tangential explorations, etc., so 2 hours is probably an unrealistic expectation for a normal board meeting.\u00a0 <\/span><\/font>But it is a worthwhile goal.\u00a0 If directors and staff can be\u00a0as well prepared in the future as Dir Bleich was last night, and if the meeting business can be kept as well on track as it was by Dir Bleich last night,\u00a0then meeting times can be significantly reduced in the future.\u00a0\u00a0They showed that more\u00a0substantive material can be covered in less time and\u00a0this is an important positive development in this board.<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

Another important development is that the board is going to formalize a protocol for audience contributions to\u00a0the board discussion during meetings that will permit\u00a0audience\u00a0members to participate\u00a0in\u00a0context as subjects are addressed. \u00a0This board\u00a0expressly stated they have no intention of being\u00a0dictators and they welcome\u00a0public input at\u00a0board meetings.\u00a0 Anyone familiar with the history of this board\u00a0knows that this is\u00a0a sea change\u00a0and it bodes well for future school relations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

Dir Bleich led\u00a0the meeting well by\u00a0guiding the discussion through prudent fact finding and keeping things moving toward\u00a0resolution.\u00a0 On the one hand this was probably an easier meeting to do that because the scope was probably more narrow than usual.\u00a0 On the other,\u00a0preparation and focus on the subject, economy of thought and consideration of everyone’s important time, these things telegraph respect to all parties and are significant improvements that should be carried through future board meetings and emulated by all who participate in them.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

Another important positive development is that Dir Bleich said he intended to propose a bylaws change to make replacement director appointments interim jobs until the next regularly scheduled board election, at which time the interim seat will be subject to a general election.\u00a0 The appointee is welcome to stand for general election at that time along with any other declared candidates.<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

The last big thing that sticks out in my mind is that the meeting was held in the library, and this environment is\u00a0way better than the cafeteria.\u00a0 Acoustics,\u00a0seat comfort and work space\u00a0are far superior.\u00a0 The facts that everyone can hear everyone else and that everyone is comfortable make for a less stressful\u00a0time and, I thought,\u00a0improved the content of the meeting.\u00a0\u00a0I hope future meetings\u00a0can be held\u00a0in the library and any tighter\u00a0total space issues resolved.\u00a0 It’s a big improvement.<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

I can’t say how well the early boards of the school behaved, but since I’ve been watching things over the past few years, this group exhibits\u00a0managerial expertise that is frankly superior.<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n
